Book Review - Tartan Temptation by Kayden Claremont

I'm going to have to confess that I decided to request this book to review from ReadingAlley because of the subtitle and the motorbike.

Real Men Wear Kilts? How the hell does that work on a motorbike, I wondered? Will there be chafing? And revealing flapping? I feel like all that fabric is probably hazardous, too. Could it get caught in the mechanics?

Well, the kilt was indeed worn when riding the motorbike, but none of my questions were really answered. I was left with quite a lot more questions than I started with... and that pretty much sets the theme for this whole review.

At 90 pages, this book has waaaay too much going on. With a book that length, trying to shove in an entire paranormal subplot as well as erotica scenes makes everything just feel utterly crammed in.

The characters don't really get any backstory, and we don't really get the time to develop any empathy with them. Even the erotica scenes feel hurried.

This could be a good story, with the destined king of the mermen needing to find his mate in order to claim his crown, but honestly it's just a hot mess. I never did figure out what had happened with Cora and Brodie's grandparents; it was never explained why Cora's father was in possession of the Cup of Truth, and the challenge for Brody's throne by his cousin was resolved by such a blatant deus ex machina that I found myself rolling my eyes.

Tartan Temptation reads almost like a summary of the book it's actually meant to be. I'd be quite interested in reading THAT book (with the deus ex machina ending resolved) but I really can't recommend THIS one.

The spelling, grammar and punctuation were good, and the sex scenes (short though they were) reasonably hot without any turgid description. Even with those points in the Pro column, there are too many Cons for me to give this book more than two stars.

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC of this book for review through ReadingAlley.
