Book Review: Vic's Tasty Treat by Christina Rose Andrews

September 23, 2017

Vic's Tasty Treat is a fabulous new novella by a pair of authors I love - yes, Christina Rose Andrews is two authors writing together.  Featuring interracial romance (BMWW) and a bisexual female protagonist, it's a breath of fresh air after some of the terrible, insensitive and diversity tone-deaf books I've been reading lately.

Paige has moved across the country to start a new life after breaking up with her girlfriend. In East Grand Rapids, she finds herself unexpectedly drawn into a Halloween decorating competition with the rest of the street. Fortunately, Vic, her neighbor's gorgeous medical student son, is all too willing to help out.

Unfortunately, Vic is hot like the sun... and ten years younger than Paige. Keeping her eyes, and her hands, to herself, is a battle she doesn't really want to win.

Can I just say how much I ADORED Paige? Her inner monologue was utterly hilarious and full of wonderful pop-culture references that had me laughing out loud and filling my Kindle notes with little hearts. A couple of my favourite examples:

"No way was she going to be the Scully to his Mulder. Unresolved sexual tension was great in a TV show but sucked dead monkey balls in real life."

"It'd be great if that were possible, but life didn't reorder itself to fit individual desires. Otherwise everyone would be Beyoncé, let's be honest."

How can you not root for a character that honest, that real? Paige absolutely deserved Vic, who was pretty much the perfect man, and the ending of the story was fantastically satisfying. Overall, the only quibble I had with the story was that I wanted it to be twice as long!

Vic's Tasty Treat is available now.
