For a 63-page novella, The Guardian packs one hell of a punch. Full of lush, evocative prose, this story really carries you away. I felt as though I was right there with Phoebe, chasing her misbehaving dog Fallon into a graveyard which wasn’t there yesterday, complete with an unearthly guardian - a man named Edward who seems surprisingly corporeal for someone born over two centuries ago.
Edward’s lonely, desperate for human contact after many years guarding the mystically powerful graveyard. Intrigued by Phoebe, he comes to enjoy her company and an attraction blooms between them which feels as inevitable as it is genuine. Caught between two worlds, any kind of future is impossible to contemplate, though, until Samhain night when everything changes and Phoebe takes action to seize what she wants.
I won’t spoil the ending for you, but this IS a romance, and I promise you won’t be disappointed! Five stars for a quick but enormously satisfying read.
